The way we pay for things with credit and debit cards has changed. In the UK we are now using Chip & PIN for the vast majority of our transactions. Chip & PIN means your cards are better protected from fraud.

The main difference is that when you go to pay for anything with your Chip & PIN card - in a shop, supermarket, hotel, restaurant or garage - you are asked to enter a four digit number instead of being asked to sign a receipt. This number is a Personal Identification Number, better known as a PIN. It is the same number as the one you use at a cash machine to withdraw money. Sometimes, you'll still have to sign when making an in-store purchase - but this will only happen when the retailer doesn't have their Chip & PIN terminal yet.

Don't worry if you don't know or can't remember your PIN - you can easily request it by dialling the PIN information line on 0844 855 2463
If you want to change your PIN to something more memorable, you can do so at most ATMs by following the on-screen instructions.
